Beer fast honors an old German monk tradition – who says men can’t live on beer?
An Iowa man following the Lenten tradition of German monasteries has chosen to go on a 46-day beer fast for Lent – a time when Catholics fast, or in current times, may simply deprive themselves of something, in the period before Easter to honor Jesus’ resurrection.
The German monks who originated this fast, brewed beer not only for economic reasons, but because water was not safe to drink at the time. It is for this reason that the fasting period included beer as the drink of choice.
As a matter of research, Jay Wilson decided to follow the beer fast for Lent. Wilson drinks only four beers a day during the week, and five beers a day on the weekend.
The initial 3 days of any fast are pretty tough, with brutal hunger pangs and headaches. Fasting for 46 days is a huge sacrifice for most Americans, however, Jay Wilson, is now 35 days in and as of day 31 had lost eighteen pounds.
Wilson told CNN about his journey thus far, “it’s actually been a little bit easier than I thought, I sorta feel bad about that. It should have been really painful.”
Wilson, also a beer blogger, still has just 11 more days to go. Apparently, whoever said men can’t survive on a beer diet was wrong.
